Rev. Joseph J. Nicholson To Be New Pastoral Counselor

Posted on by admin in News Leave a comment

CCC is pleased to announce that the Rev Joseph J. Nicholson  will become CCC’s  new pastoral counselor beginning the first week of April. He succeeds Rev. Elizabeth A. Perry, who has been in the part-time position since September 2015. She submitted her resignation due to an increased workload with BeADisciple.com, where she teaches on-line courses.

Rev. Nicholson is a chaplain with the EMS division of the New York City Fire Department. He began this work in 2014 in an internship during his studies at Union Theological Seminary. His supervisor in the internship was Rev. Stephen Harding, who was then the rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Chelsea. After completion of the internship, Rev. Nicholson stayed on as a chaplain in the EMS division. “This kind of chaplaincy differs from hospital or hospice chaplaincy, the type most people are familiar with, in that my primary role is ‘ministry by presence,’” Rev. Nicholson explains. “I often describe it to the people I work with as ‘I am here to represent God, whatever God you may believe in, on scene and to provide moral and spiritual support in any way that I am able.”

He received his master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in 2016 and is currently enrolled in the master of sacred theology program there. He expects to receive that degree in 2020. Ordained by the American Fellowship Church, a nondenominational Protestant church in 2017, Rev. Nicholson remains active in the Episcopal church. He is a licensed lay Eucharistic minister in the Episcopal diocese of New York and has been a lay service leader at St. Peter’s since 2014. He has been the officiant at a Sunday evening service at St. Peter’s that has been temporarily suspended.

Prior to beginning his seminary studies, Rev. Nicholson was an entrepreneur. He developed several financial services enterprises and created an apparel company that sold the products it designed and manufactured via the Internet.

We hope to see you soon to welcome Rev. Nicholson to our church and our community!

SCOTT Jerry Memorial Photo 0001 crpd & rszdJerry Scott, extraordinary Manhattan entertainer whose stellar renditions over a span of 40 years encompassed every genre of music from show tunes to standards to pop to operetta to ragtime, died peacefully on April 4 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx after a valiant struggle with cancer, at age 67.  On any given night, his repertory might range from versatile interpretations of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin or Gershwin to tearing down the rafters with a raucous sing-along in an over-packed, noisy room. He had a repertoire of more than 2500 songs. Jerry considered Chelsea Community Church “his NYC church” and in addition to accompanying various Church soloists numbered many CCCers as friends.  At Jerry’s request, his memorial service was held at  Chelsea Community Church in St. Peter’s Church, on May 4.
